9-Year-Old Boy Dies After Floodwaters Sweep Him Into Drainage in Asaba

A nine-year-old boy, Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, has died after he was reportedly swept away by floodwaters during heavy rainfall around Redeem Junction on Okpanam Road, Asaba, Delta State.

The incident first drew widespread attention on Monday after social activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared a missing child alert on Facebook, urging residents around Anwai Road and nearby communities to search drainage channels, culverts and waterways for the boy.

In an update on Tuesday, August 4, Gwamnishu confirmed that Emmanuel had been found. The child was pulled from the floodwaters and rushed to a hospital, where doctors reportedly confirmed him dead on arrival.

Reports indicate that Emmanuel was swept away from the Redeem Road/Okpanam Road axis, while his body was later recovered near the Asaba International Airport.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over the dangers posed by flooding and exposed drainage systems in Asaba, with residents calling on government authorities to improve flood control measures and cover or secure open drains to prevent similar incidents.
