Refuse Dump Chokes Orhuwhorun Junction, Raises Health, Safety Concerns

A growing heap of refuse has taken over a section of the major roundabout of Orhuwhorun Junction, near Jigbale Market in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, forcing motorists and pedestrians to navigate through a narrowing stretch of the busy road.

The waste dump, made up of household refuse, plastic bags and other debris reportedly gathered from the nearby market, has become an eyesore in the commercial area, with road users struggling to avoid the obstruction, while vehicles compete for the remaining space.

Beyond its unpleasant appearance, the indiscriminate dumping poses environmental and public health risks, as decaying waste could attract flies, rodents and other disease-carrying pests while emitting offensive odours.

With the heavy rains, residents also fear that the refuse could block drainage channels, increasing the risk of flooding.

The situation has also reduced the aesthetic appeal of the area, which is one of the busiest gateways to the train station community of Ujevwu, raising concerns over sanitation and urban management.

Residents and traders are calling on the Udu Local Government Council and relevant environmental authorities to evacuate the refuse, provide proper waste disposal facilities and enforce environmental sanitation laws to prevent further indiscriminate dumping.
