South Africa Returnees Head Home as Delta Government Moves to Offer Relief

For many Deltans forced to flee South Africa after the recent xenophobic attacks, the journey home marks the end of a painful ordeal and the beginning of rebuilding their lives.

The Delta State Government is set to officially receive the returnees on Friday, July 31, at the Unity Hall, Old Government House, Asaba, where Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is expected to present a support package to help them settle back into their communities.

According to a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the ceremony will begin at 12 noon, with invited guests expected to arrive by 11:30 a.m.

The returnees, many of whom were displaced by the violence in South Africa, are expected to receive assistance aimed at easing the immediate challenges of resettlement. Government officials, community leaders and other stakeholders are also expected at the event to welcome the affected citizens and show solidarity with them as they begin a new chapter back home.
