Eto’o, Okocha, Kanu, Diouf, Martins Headline African Legends’ Football Clash for Olu’s 5th Anniversary

Warri is set for a star-studded football spectacle on August 22 as some of Africa’s biggest football names are expected to converge on the city for a novelty match.

Former African Footballer of the Year winners *Samuel Eto’o, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and El Hadji Diouf* are among the legends expected to feature, alongside former Nigeria international Obafemi Martins and other celebrated African stars and indigenous talents.

The exhibition match forms part of activities marking the fifth coronation anniversary of His Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, the Olu of Warri.

The encounter is expected to blend football, culture and royalty, while celebrating the monarch’s reign and its emphasis on unity, cultural identity and development within the Warri Kingdom.

Beyond the entertainment, the organisers said the match is intended to inspire young footballers across the Niger Delta by highlighting the importance of discipline, commitment and hard work in achieving sporting success.

For football fans in Delta State, the appearance of the legendary players is expected to provide a rare opportunity to watch some of the stars who dominated African and international football during their playing careers.

Eto’o enjoyed a decorated spell with clubs including Barcelona and Inter Milan, while Okocha and Kanu remain iconic figures in Nigerian football. Diouf was central to Senegal’s celebrated generation, while Martins built a reputation internationally for his speed and goalscoring ability.

The Warri showdown is therefore expected to be more than a novelty game, bringing together football legends, local talent and the wider community in a celebration of sport, heritage and excellence.
