Team Delta Special Athletes Receive Cash, Equipment as Oborevwori Visits Camp

Team Delta’s special athletes received a morale boost on Saturday as the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, paid an unscheduled visit to their training camp in Lagos, presenting them with sports kits and financial support.

The athletes were provided with tracksuits, training kits, water bottles and other essential materials, while the Commission also donated ₦500,000 to support the team.

Oborevwori said the visit was aimed at honouring commitments previously made to the athletes and reaffirming the state’s dedication to their welfare and sporting development.

“Earlier this year, we visited them here in Lagos and assured them of the Delta State Government’s continued support. That visit was important because Team Delta could not participate in the Para Games held in Abuja.

“We made some promises then, and my visit today is to fulfil those promises.

“I also want to assure them that their request for sporting equipment has been approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. These athletes are very special to us, and the Delta State Sports Commission will continue to do everything possible to support and encourage them.

“Soon, our special athletes will have access to world-class training equipment in Asaba, and they will train there once or twice every month as part of preparations for the 2026 National Sports Festival in Enugu,” he said.

In a related development, Delta State has enlisted about 10 athletes based in the United States for the 2026 Commonwealth Games National Trials taking place at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

The competition was originally scheduled to begin on Saturday but was shifted to Sunday after thunderstorms in the United States disrupted flight schedules, delaying the departure of the athletes.

The contingent includes Nyenuchi Okemgbo, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Oyesade Olatoye, Dolapo Divine Oladipo, Obiageri Amaechi, Jami Schlueter and Adaobi Orjiugo Tabugbo, all expected to compete in their respective events.

Also joining Team Delta’s delegation is US-based coach Gabriel Opuana, who has been drafted into the state’s technical crew for the trials.
