NANS Demands Swift Rescue of Abducted Ogun Polytechnic Students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the abduction of five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Ogun State, following an armed attack on a private hostel along Paraga Road, Ipara. The association described the incident as a disturbing attack on the safety of Nigerian students.

In a statement signed by its President, Dist. Comr. Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, NANS said it received the news “with deep sorrow and grave concern,” noting that the incident came only days after a robbery attack at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, which reportedly claimed the life of HND II student, Miss Ahmed Sekinat, and left several others injured.

Condemning the attacks, the student body stated that, “Education is a right, and no student should have to trade their safety for the pursuit of knowledge. The security of students is non-negotiable; it is paramount and mandatory.”

NANS called on the Federal Government, the Ogun State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Army, and other security agencies to ensure the immediate rescue of the abducted students. It urged authorities to deploy every available resource to secure their safe and unconditional release.

The association also called for increased investment in affordable on-campus hostels, saying this would reduce students’ exposure to security risks linked to off-campus accommodation. It added that “statements of condolence and assurances after each tragedy can no longer suffice,” stressing that students deserve visible and lasting security measures.

NANS reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the safety of students, insisting it would continue engaging relevant authorities until the abducted students are safely returned and stronger security measures are implemented across tertiary institutions nationwide.
