Cult Initiation Ceremony Disrupted in Orogun Ughelli North

Residents of Orogun in Ughelli North Local Government Area were spared what authorities believe could have been another episode of cult-related violence after security operatives disrupted a suspected initiation ceremony linked to the Black Axe confraternity.

The operation followed intelligence reports that suspected members of the cult group had gathered in a forest in the community during the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026.

Operatives of the Quick Response Squad (QRS) moved into the area after receiving the information. The suspects reportedly opened fire on the approaching team before fleeing into the forest along the Abbi–Abraka axis as security operatives responded.

A search of the area led to the recovery of a pump-action gun, a cut-to-size double-barrel gun, seven live cartridges, two expended cartridges, seven vehicles, six mobile phones, suspected cult regalia and other personal belongings believed to have been abandoned by those who fled.

The recovered items are now in police custody, while efforts are continuing to identify and apprehend those involved.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the officers involved in the operation and reiterated the command’s resolve to sustain intelligence-driven efforts aimed at tackling cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
