Delta Makes History as Asaba Specialist Hospital Unveils Nigeria’s First Helium-Free MRI Scanner

Patients in Delta State requiring advanced diagnostic imaging can now access Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) services at Asaba Specialist Hospital following the installation of Nigeria’s first helium-free Siemens 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner.

The milestone was announced by the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Dr. Peace Ighosewe, who described the new equipment as a significant step towards expanding access to specialised healthcare and improving diagnostic services in the state.

According to the hospital, the helium-free MRI system offers advanced imaging capabilities while requiring less maintenance than conventional MRI machines, making it more efficient and environmentally sustainable. The facility also provided free MRI scans to patients for two days to mark the commencement of the service, with more than 10 people benefiting from the initiative.

The introduction of the scanner is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside Delta State for MRI examinations, enabling quicker diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of medical conditions. The development also aligns with an ongoing programme to strengthen diagnostic capacity across major government-owned hospitals in the state through the installation of modern MRI systems.
